Mederma reviews aroused my curiosity because they seem so positive.

I thought it was time I did a review of this scar cream to see what the truth was.

The bottom line here is that although your skin the can repair itself when it’s cut, abraised or torn, often scars are left behind forever.

As a scar forms, it creates inflammation.

On top of that, as a scar heals, collagen may form in an irregular manner around the scar, creating an uneven surface and patterns.

Often it can also cause a raised and hardened area.

This is also true of stretch marks.

So dealing with scars and stretch marks is a complex process, especially when there are so many types, so what’s the truth about Mederma?

What Is Mederma?

The Mederma range targets scars and stretch marks through the following products:

Mederma Stretch Mark Therapy Cream
Mederma Stretch Mark Therapy Cream
Mederma Intensive Overnight Scar Cream

PM Intensive Overnight Scar Cream

Mederma Advanced Scar Gel

Advanced Scar Gel

Mederma Scar Cream (SPF30)

Mederma Scar Cream (SPF30)

There is often some confusion about the range of products because they do target different types of scarring, making people wonder which to use, something we will talk about later.

But generally, it falls into two groups, Mederma for stretch marks, and Mederma products for scarring.

There is another product, Mederma for kids.

However that has exactly the same technical construction, the only difference being that it is a purple color initially and then dries clear.

Mederma Ingredients

The main active ingredient in Mederma is onion extract.

This is not earth-shattering and many other skin products containing it as well.

A 2007 study did find that onion extract can reduce inflammation of the skin. In the short term, this can make fresh scars less noticeable.

It was also found that it could potentially shrink scars over time.

This is because it was found to slightly inhibit the development of collagen, which is the cause of hardened and raised areas on scars.

The second active ingredient is Allantoin 0.5% .

Within each product, there are other ingredients such as antioxidants, peptides and bizarrely collagen.

When I say bizarrely, it’s because the active ingredient is onion extract which claims to inhibit the development of collagen which can increase scarring.

Yet the intensive overnight scar cream, which is designed to work at night when allegedly the skin can regenerate itself more quickly, contains collagen.

That appears to me to be quite contradictory, feeding the scar something the active ingredient is minimizing?

So Does Mederma Really Work On All Scars?

mederma scars before after

To be clear, there are several distinct types of skin scarring, all with different causes and effects:

  • Keloids
  • Burn scars
  • Stretch marks
  • Acne scars
  • Cutting or abrasion scars

The bottom line here is that different scars form in different ways and have different structures.

All topical scar creams contain ingredients that claim to flatten scars and shrink them, such as onion extract, cortisone, silicone, and Vitamin E.

Generally each of these natural ingredients can affect scars in a minor way, but considering that people have to go through surgical scar treatment to get rid of even severe acne scars, and you can see how limited these products tend to be in terms of specifically targeting the scar.

Merderma acne scars lessening evidence is therefore going to require closer scrutiny by looking at what people say.

Mederma Cream Reviews & Complaints

Mederma reviews

A great place to look is Amazon, because there are so many verified purchases of any type of product.

Taking the Mederma advanced scar gel as an example product, it currently has 991 reviews on Amazon.

Of those, 52% are five-star reviews.

So generally the product is accepted positively:

“I am using 2 times a day about 2 weeks and my scar is better and lighter color now, hope it will get even lighter.”

However, my skepticism about how effective it is is echoed by this user review:

“It’s getting better but I’m not sure it’s because of this ointment or just it cures itself.”

And that’s the point here. Most user reviews are going to be very soon after the initial scar is formed, when the cut or abrasion is still healing.

So obviously whether you use the cream or not the initial healing is going to be dramatic.

This could be mistaken as from the cream, rather than just the body’s natural healing process.

This is borne out by the negative reviews such as:

“I have used this product as directed and have not seen any difference in the appearance of my scar. I was not expecting miracles but after 3 months, I expected to see a little difference in the shade of my scar. But, there has been no change. I will continue to use it until the tube is empty. If I find that there is some later change in the appearance of my scar, I will provide an update.”

So the truth is seems to be that although it has some minor effects, a lot of the initial enthusiasm around this product is because the body’s natural healing process is mistaken for Mederma.

Mederma Price & Where To Buy It

mederma official website

Mederma has one particular benefit that puts it atop many of its competitors – and this is the fact that this brand of skin care products is not only available on the internet, but also at most common local supermarkets and pharmacies within the United States.

Customers can choose to buy products manufactured by this brand directly on their online store. Additionally, these products are also available at Amazon.com and some other online retailers.

Apart from being available on the internet, the following stores in the United States also stock products manufactured by the Mederma brand:

  • CVS Pharmacy
  • Rite Aid
  • Target
  • Walmart
  • Walgreens

This brand manufactures a large number of different products – the prices of these products vary greatly.

Overall, most products are relatively affordable, especially when the prices of products by this particular brand is compared to the prices of similar products from competing brands.

One of the brand’s most popular products, the Quick Dry Oil, for example, costs just over $10 ($10.86 to be exact) for a 3.4-ounce bottle.

The PM Intensive Overnight Serum costs $13.98. The Advanced Scar Gel costs between $13.19 and $24.97, depending on the size that the customer opts for during the purchasing process.

Mederma Money Back Guarantee & Refund Policy

While the majority of skin care brands on the market today offer some kind of money back guarantee to ensure the satisfaction of their customers, we were unable to find any information regarding money back guarantee from this particular brand.

This can be somewhat unfortunate for customers, especially since there are some side-effects and complaints noted among past customers.

When a person buys a product they are not familiar with, they want to make sure that they are not going to be wasting more money.

This is why money back guarantee is so useful – it allows a customer to get at least a portion of the money they spent back if the products they purchased are not working well for them.

Customers are advised that they can still get in touch with the manufacturer to see if they may qualify for a refund on their purchase if they didn’t like the results.

While we cannot guarantee that a refund will be issued, there is always the slight possibility that the brand would accept the request and provide the customer with a refund.

Possible Mederma Scar Cream Side Effects

Mederma side effects

Some users report minor irritation using this product.

However, this is usually reported as itching, which anyone who has had a scar knows can just be part of the healing process.

One possible concern is that Mederma pm for acne scars had a lot of users reporting irritation and reddened skin.

As this is obviously going to be purchased by younger people with more sensitive skin, this could point to an issue with this product.

I would recommend that if you are going to use this as an acne treatment on a young person that you first speak to a doctor or dermatologist.

Mederma Review: Summing Up

I’m afraid it for me there is not a lot of evidence that Mederma will do a lot for you.

Although it could help with very minor scarring and acne, many user reviews seem to suggest that you can use tube upon tube of this stuff and see no difference at all.

I cannot find any scientific studies which back up the claims made by the manufacturers, and generally I’m unconvinced that it has much of a positive effect on anything other than new scars which are going to heal anyway.

Pros of Mederma:

  • Quickly available from the multiple range of major outlets.
  • Cheap price.
  • Simple to use.
  • Low risk for most users.

Cons of Mederma:

  • More expensive than natural remedies which a lot of people report do exactly the same.
  • Some evidence it can irritate people with more sensitive skin.
  • Not as claimed, you cannot just target any type of scarring.

In 1998 my daughter fell into the 1% of caucasians that developed keloids, and her scar was from chest to stomach. Your product had just come out. but it was a strip of gel product and her ugly red scar went flat and was no longer red, it was barely noticeable. Do you still offer this item? I have a friend who needs the redults my daughter had. Please advise.

Wow, this is a great product. Use this and add amino acid in your diet to have the best result since amino builds and recover your muscle that was damaged.
